A periodontist is a dentist specializing in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the soft tissues and bone surrounding the teeth. Dr. Suway and Dr. Toscano each trained an additional three years beyond the four years of regular dental school, and uses the most advanced techniques necessary to treat periodontal disease and place dental implants. They also performs a vast range of cosmetic procedures to enhance the smile to its fullest extent.
Periodontal disease begins when the toxins found in plaque start to attack the gingival tissues surrounding the teeth. This inflammatory process destroys the bone resulting in pockets between the teeth and gums. If no treatment is sought, the bone loss continues causing unstable teeth and tooth loss.
If you experience any of these signs and symptoms, please feel free to call the office:
-
Bleeding while eating or brushing
-
Bad breath
-
Loose teeth or shifting teeth
-
Gum recession - exposed roots
- Excessive Gum Tissue - "gummy smile"
-
Related health conditions – Heart disease, diabetes, osteopenia and osteoporosis are highly correlated with periodontal infections. The bacteria infection can spread through the blood stream and affect other parts of the body.
It is important to halt the progression of periodontal
disease before it causes further damage to the gum tissues and jawbone. Dr. Suway and Dr. Toscano will assess the entire mouth in order to ascertain the extent
of the disease. When a diagnosis has been made, the doctors will
recommend the most conservative treatment that is appropriate.
Please feel free to call the office if you have questions about periodontal disease, periodontal treatment or dental implants.
